Gotta Love when popular mechanics promotes a lack of mechanical ability.

I’m sorry, but what a dumb fucking article.

Yea right? The kicker at the end is the windshield wiper repair. Calling a windshield wiper replacement a repair is like using The Situation Room to determine how many pepperoni and how many cheese pizzas people need at a party.

I’m not very good at car washing, but I always do better than an automatic car wash

Wait, you’re not supposed to call a Situation Room meeting for pizza topping discussions!? Damn....

I’ve met people that view at such.

I understand their view on these. However that opinion warrants no more than a blog or forum post, not an article in a long running magazine.

That’s not how Legionnaires disease works. If DIY wasn’t a pain at times then everyone would do it. He has a point about modern car batteries. You can still do it yourself often but it can be a pain. I had a hell of a time changing spark plugs on an Impala once. Knuckle busting at its best.

I’m sorry, but I’ll never wash my car as good as a “real car wash?”
Bitch, you doin it wrong.
I’ll do my Cougar and Mustang myself and keep the swirls away. That and I am actually pretty good at detailing.
This article was written by a member of the high school A/V Squad I’m guessing.

well I thought the humorous part is that it was published in Popular Mechanics - a magazine with a significant percentage of its readership who are the “Ughhhnnn I’m a man with power tools who can fix things.” type of guys

That’s what I thought was funny too. Isn’t this the same magazine that back in the 30's and 40's told you to make homemade airplanes and such? What happened to that?

I find Ezra Dyer to be a highly entertaining writer, and I do see where he’s coming from, but that article is very much not in the spirit of PM.

Now I see a rear diff about to be serviced and I think “hmm, yeah, I don’t do my own gear work, I don’t have the dials, tools and know how so I can see how...” *reads article* “....wait, what?!”

More like AC, set up Gears ( like the photo they were using), head gasket, rebuilds: trans or motor.
I mean those take more than just a couple of wrenches and sockets.

If you google search you can find scans of old issues with how to make your own bandsaw and crazy crap here is one on how to build a jeep car for your offspring.

ok hear me out
My time is precious,
I’ve worked in shops for years, and also installed exhausts, headers, coil overs and suspension parts including air suspension on 2 cars in my driveway, and i must say,
I agree with the oil change, and depending on the car, the spark plugs too. Every try changing the plugs in an older maxima or an older v6 quest? PITA!
as far as the oil change and car washes goes, it takes me longer to set up and clean up everything in my driveway vs just rolling up to the car wash, lube shop or visiting my trusted mechanic who lets me work alongside him when working on my car.
That being said, I encourage everyone to do what they can!
Rotate tires, change brake pads or rotors, replace and axle, install an intake, or a bolt on exhaust/muffler, install a stereo/sub/amp.

Yea I was doing some thinking about why they’d run an article like that, and I figured that was the reason - the time and effort to get shit set up might not even be worth the $30 I save by doing a synthetic oil change myself.
But what threw me off was the windshield wiper repair at the end. I think it would’ve been better if they had something like a CV axle replacement, brake change etc. as you mentioned.

axle replacement and brakes can be pretty intimidating and complicated
but the wipers thing? the guys at the local auto parts store will do that for anyone lol

Yea I guess so. I’m sort of spoiled by my Honda Accord where brakes, CV axles, heck even a full strut replacement are just 4-8 rust abused bolts away!
